The Ugly Truth About Where Chocolate Comes From and the Child Slave
Labor Behind It |

Children suffer as labor slaves so the world can enjoy cheap chocolate...and
buying Fair Trade cocoa and chocolate is the MAIN solution to this awful practice. The average age of boys
forced into slavery is 12-14 years old, girls are 10-12...but children as young as 3 years old have been found being
worked as slaves on cocoa farms.
This is a particularly abhorrent form of child labor and these kids are subjected to unbelievably appalling conditions
on cacao farms. In the camps, they are packed into sub-human living conditions in
hot metal shacks and locked in when they're not working...in tropical heat, with
a dozen or more other slaves. Many slave children will never see their parents again.
The primary concentration is the Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast),
producer of nearly HALF the world's chocolate. Children carry heavy loads
(each cocoa pod weighs about 1.5 lbs), are whipped and beaten and are barely
fed. Ironically enough, they will never even TASTE the chocolate
that is produced from their stolen lives. They will never go to school.
Another heart wrenching fact: they use machetes to
harvest the cocoa pods and are thrown away like garbage
if they maim themselves with these
dangerous tools. They lose limbs so are not only emotionally scarred for life,
they're permanently handicapped as well.
Some will die alone in slave camps.

horrific facts, I KNEW I could never eat cheap, slave labor chocolate
again...when I viewed the sad faces of the exploited children, I knew I HAD to
help. I hope you feel the same way and choose to switch to Fair Trade
chocolate...of course, we'd prefer you choose ours but if you don't, PLEASE make
the switch and stop the slavery and injustice! Just so you know, we donate
